Dog Days of Summer "Dog Days of Summer" refers to a specific time of the summer that we don't hit until Wednesday; traditionally, they are marked by hot and humid weather, or so says The Old Farmer's Almanac, which also explains the ancient Greeks and Romans believed them to be a time of drought, bad luck and heat-induced madness. For me, though, it refers to a series of good things done for dogs in need in the past few days. In brief, my friend found a dog straying close to traffic on Thursday, got her safely into her vehicle, and then the Montrose Police Department took the time to come and fetch the dog later that evening. Good news — they found her family and returned her! Thank you to my friend and the MPD! On Sunday, we encountered a small, older black terrier, her muzzle going to white, wandering around the East Main Coffee Trader. The amazing Leah Cole sprung into action, checking with everyone there to see if anyone owned the dog. She placed her safely into her air conditioned vehicle, and got in touch with dispatch, then rearranged her entire day to deliver the dog to the Montrose Animal Shelter. So, if you are missing a sweet, older terrier, check there! They are calling her "Lambada" and estimate her age at 5. She will be available for adoption July 8 if not reclaimed. The shelter is adoption only. It is located at 3383 N. Townsend Ave. Phone: 970-240-1487; montrose.animalshelternet.com ("Lambada" was found at Coffee Trader on Sunday. There's a fundraiser for Mrs. Claus For A Cause on Aug. 24 — Adult Prom, starting at 7 p.m. at Montrose Elks Lodge ($25 to $30 for a ticket). You can also sponsor a table for $300. Read more about it here Leah has helped many people in need over the past years and recently received the city's "You Make a Difference" Award — the first citizen to be so recognized. Watching her in action Sunday only confirmed the reward was richly deserved. Well done, Leah! (Leah Cole receives the inaugural "You Make a Difference" award from Mayor David Reed in June. In about 30 minutes, Officers Kali Henderson, Kazan Trujillo, and Justin Borcherding, with Sgt. John Laiminger, had rigged a line around the stranded pooch and lifted her to safety. She went first to Roice Hurst in Delta, where a scan revealed she had a microchip, and she was reunited with her people. Tail wag! Nice job, DPD, and observant landowner! (Rescuer in action. Photo by DPD) On a related note, DPD reiterates that this time of year, people need to double down on keeping their dogs (and cats) safe and secure — fireworks can send an animal into a blind panic, because they do not know what is happening. More dogs are reported lost during the Fourth of July week than most other times of the year. Keep your pooch and your kitty cat inside your home this week, keeping in mind that people don't confine their celebrations only to the Fourth. Just in case, make sure your dog or cat has a collar with — and this is important — ID ON IT. A collar without a current ID on it is useless: People may find your dog or cat, but without the ID, they have no way of knowing, and not everyone is aware, or is able, to take an animal to a vet to have it scanned for a microchip. Here is some safety advice from the American Veterinary Medical Association. Since we're talking about dogs anyway: Do not leave your dog in your car. It is too hot for them to be safe, as this recent Pet Column from Second Chance Humane Society details. If you have to run errands, take your dog home first, both for its own safety, and out of respect to others who will be in places like grocery stores and shops/restaurants that are not dog-friendly.
