A hero votes Sometimes, the best stories just fall into your lap. Last week, it was my privilege to speak to James Corson, who didn't let a mix-up with his ballot deter him from voting, even though he had to leave his care home and find help to vote in person on Election Day. James is a veteran — WWII veteran, and 100 years old. I was put in touch with him, thanks to Ruth and Ray Jantzen, volunteers who helped him make it to the polls, along with his daughter, Paula Knighton. Here is our story. I am grateful to men and women like James, who served in our Armed Forces, or who continue to serve. Today is set aside nationally to honor veterans, and I extend sincere good wishes on this Veterans Day. You can read the history of Veterans Day here. Also, if you like football and veterans, come out to the MHS playoff game Nov. 16. At 1 p.m., the team will be honoring veterans. (Here are Paula and James, right after he voted. Courtesy of Ruth Jantzen) You can help! If you're grateful for what you have, consider sharing a little — in terms of your time. Montrose Community Dinners is again planning to host the annual free Thanksgiving Day meal on Thanksgiving, which this year falls on Nov. 28. The nonprofit needs volunteers for the week leading up to Thanksgiving, and on the Big Day — everything from set up and tear-down to running the pie station and driving delivery meals. Check out montrosecommunitydinners.com for more info and opportunities, or call the volunteer line at 970-318-6724. Cash donations and sponsorships are always needed and welcomed: visit the site to use your card or PayPal, or mail a check to Montrose Community Dinners, P.O. Box 3540, Montrose, CO 81402-3540. |
