City on the defense as judge's firing is questioned; officials deny connection to ruling on church's homeless camp

Montrose's municipal judge was let go just weeks after ruling against the city's request for an abatement order that would have shut down the Methodist Church's camp for the unhoused.
City officials say the judge, Erin Maxwell, was one of city council's direct hires who came up for review March 31 and that her departure is not linked to her February ruling.
"There is very little I can say concerning employment, as we are barred by state law," Mayor Dave Frank said. "The misconception (arises from) that the annual review for all of our hires is March. The timing of that is based on our annual review process."

Former Cedaredge mayor, community leader dies unexpectedly; Richard Udd was 'pillar of our community'

Richard Udd, former Cedaredge mayor and involved member of community affairs, died unexpectedly in his sleep at his Telluride home over the weekend weekend, according to the San Miguel County Coroner. He was 83 years old
News of Udd's passing has spread, as the Cedaredge Rotary Club, of which Udd was a member, mourned his passing on Facebook, calling him a "neighbor and tireless public servant who served his community well."
