| South Rim Fire: Heat and wind The past week has not been easy on the West. • Our iconic Black Canyon of the Gunnison: on fire and closed since July 10, with park guests evacuated and Montrose County residents in the area issued evacuation orders. Neither temperatures nor winds have demonstrably improved for better fire-fighting conditions. Last acreage count: 3,633. •The Dominguez-Escalante Canyon in Delta/Mesa/Montrose counties: also on fire, with more than 2,200 acres charred in the Sowbelly Fire. • Other fires are burning in Gateway Canyon, prompting evacuation orders there. • In Utah, the Deer Creek Fire has burned more than 10,000 acres, also prompting evacuations. • In Arizona, the White Sage Fire has burned more than 49,000 acres and the Dragon Bravo Fire on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon destroyed the historic Grand Canyon Lodge. We have been, and will be, providing regular updates on the South Rim Fire, which yesterday earned Montrose County a verbal disaster declaration from the state, which also covered the Sowbelly and other fires burning in our area. Please understand that our print edition's deadlines affect what you may read in print, versus what is online, as we can update online information as things change. Keep checking montrosepress.com for our coverage. Latest info: South Rim Fire still at 0% containment, and transitioned this morning to a complex incident management team. Crews are assessing the fire spread from Sunday night and continue working the east end of the fire to protect dam infrastructure and powerlines. Fire on the northeast side is active, but burning back into itself. Water scooper aircraft were on the way — and the west side of Blue Mesa Reservoir is closed to allow firefighting aircraft to access the water. At last report, U.S. 50 remained open, but you are advised to check cotrip.org. Stay safe, and pray for monsoons. — Katharhynn, from the Newsroom |
