Remembering Wade

I start this Monday with sadness, after learning Montrose lost ones of its stalwarts, Wayne Quade. Wayne was perhaps best known for his dedication to local Scouting. He was a retired U.S. Forest Service worker and a Partners mentor.

Most of all, he was, to borrow a term from Steve Woody, "one of life's good guys." Wayne survived a terrible crash outside of Grand Junction some years ago - true to form, he had been on his way to give someone a ride from the bus station there, when he rolled outside of Whitewater. That was in 2018; Wayne rallied and soon was walking through the office door again, to tell us the latest news about Scouting and jamborees.

Wayne passed away on July 4, but the life he lived his proof that you need not ever achieve worldwide fame to do the world a world of good. Thank you, Wayne. I will miss you. Rest in peace.

Further condolences

We at the Daily Press extend our profound condolences to the family of Jodel Bitonio. The Colorado State Patrol on Monday identified Mr. Bitonio, 51, of Montrose, as the person who was found deceased on U.S. 50 outside of Delta early Sunday. We also extend sincere sympathy to the first responders and witnesses.

County shake-up

Today, more waves rippled through county government.

• At the start
of the commissioners' work session, Leslie Quon resigned as the interim county manager, while retaining her position as human resources director. Her resignation letter, in its entirety, can be found here.

• The county opted
not to proceed with hiring its finalist for the county manager spot, Bradley Mitchell of Texas. Mr. Mitchell prepared at letter to the citizens of Montrose, which Commission Chair Scott Mijares read aloud. Based on what was said, it appears as though Mijares wanted to proceed, but Commissioners Sean Pond and Sue Hansen did not.

And even more county news
: Recall efforts, long rumored, are now underway against Mijares. The Recall Scott Mijares Committee today filed a notice with the clerk, and previously also filed with the state. You can read our breaking news about it here.
