Sweating it out with KVNF ...

Image

Public radio and television has been part of my daily existence for as long as I can remember. From learning with puppets on "Sesame Street" to hearing the day's news on "Morning Edition," to chuckling in my driveway as I stuck around to finish an episode of Car Talk," it's provided education, entertainment, sometimes even enlightenment and illumination.

Locally, we've got KVNF, the Western Slope public radio station with studios in Paonia and Montrose. Recently, I spoke with folks at the radio station  — general manager Ashley Krest and reporter Brody Wilson — about the prospects of losing federal funding, which could happen by the end of this week.

Yesterday, the Senate moved forward with debate on a rescissions package requested by the president which would gut more than a billion dollars of funding from the Corporation of Public Broadcasting — which could have devastating impacts on local public radio stations, especially in rural areas where the stations often serve as the lone source of critical information.

To read about how KVNF is approaching this potential slash in funding, check out: KVNF sweats it out.

Officials offer grim insight into wildfire at Black Canyon: 'most of the south rim of the park is burned' — 'It looks very different than when you saw it last time' [UPDATED]

The South Rim Fire is burning, filling the air thick with smoke, triggering evacuations and encompassing more than 4,000 acres. On Tuesday evening during a public forum, officials offered some insight into what's going in the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park as firefighters contend with the wildfire.
The scene relayed was bleak, with only slight shimmers of silver linings.
"So, most of the south rim of the park is burned. Probably, I would say, somewhere in the vicinity of 85%, somewhere around there, of the south rim is burned," said Stewart West, superintendent of the Black Canyon National Park. "It looks very different than when you saw it last time."

A sermon and a celebration: The Wood Brothers and more will play Paonia's big concert Saturday

When The Wood Brothers take the stage with a sound that blends roots, blues, gospel, jazz and more, bassist and vocalist Chris Wood said the experience is cathartic for both the audience and the musical trio.

"On our best nights, it's kind of like going to church — but not like any church you've ever been to," he said.
The Wood Brothers — along with Emily Scott Robinson and Ley Line — perform at Big B's Delicious Orchards in Paonia July 19.
