Russell Stover to close early; City moves to tier 3 | From the Newsroom

Many areas of the Montrose community are lifting some restrictions, but Russell Stover, hit by the pandemic, will be closing its doors earlier than anticipated.

EARLIER CLOSING:
Russell Stover Candies informed employees today that instead of closing on the originally-planned date of March 2021, the factory will now be closing on August 28 of this year. The story will run in tomorrow's print edition of the Montrose Daily Press.

HAPPENING TODAY: The Wick Poetry Center at Kent State University is holding a live discussion at 3 p.m. today (Tuesday, May 19) with center director David Hassler on the healing power of poetry and how we can unlock it in our everyday lives. With everything that's been going on the past couple of months, we decided to organize this event.

CITY MOVES TO TIER 3 RESPONSE: Starting yesterday, the city of Montrose has moved to a Tier 3 emergency response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Public restrooms will be reopening, and some in-person city operations can resume.

FIGHTING AGAINST VAPING: After hearing of a California law firm filing a class action lawsuit (on behalf of school districts across America) against Juul Labs, the MCSD board gave a consensus for Superintendent Schiell to continue conversations with the law group. A 2017 study showed that Montrose County youth were experimenting with or using e-cigarettes at the highest rates across Colorado.

A NEW FORM OF SOCIAL DISTANCING: With many people's vacations and travel plans being canceled amid the pandemic, people have turned to RVs and other camping methods to salvage their summer plans. State parks in Colorado are reopening in phases, allowing people to find solace in outdoor recreation while following social distancing protocols.
