Courthouse surprise, no investigation, and Black Friday tornado | From the Newsrooms

During my years of exile in the Florida Keys, I received an education in heat and heat related illnesses. I learned most of it using my favorite method; the hard way.

ImageA SURPRISE: Imagine you are finishing up another normal workday when suddenly the roof falls down. OK, maybe not the entire roof, but for employees at the Montrose County Clerk and Recorder's office, that's what happened on July 24 when a 4-by-10-foot section of ceiling fell in. Areas of the building are closed off now for renovations.

THE COLORADO BUREAU of Investigation will not be taking up a criminal investigation into the conflict between Montrose former mayor Dave Bowman, head of the Montrose Summer Music Series, and Janece Culver, owner of the Divot's restaurant on the city-owned Black Canyon Golf Course.

BLACK FRIDAY: On July 31, 1987, a deadly F4 tornado tore through Edmonton, Alberta, killing 27 and leaving hundreds wounded.
The once-in-a-generation storm became known as Black Friday

MONTROSE COUNTY has exceeded its COVID-19 case threshold, according to the CDPHE, meaning the variance the county had in place will go away. But Montrose County Deputy County Manager John Waschbusch said the governor's orders have pretty much caught up with the variance, meaning minimal differences as far as orders go. CDPHE is asking the county to implement mitigation efforts, though.

THROWBACK THURSDAY: On this day in 2017, the Center for Mental Health shared its plans for a mental health crisis center in Montrose. The Center originally purchased a building downtown (145 S. Cascade) but swapped that building with Region 10. The Center for Mental Health's crisis center is now located at 300 N. Cascade.

LOOK OUT FOR MUDSLIDES: Mountains surrounding Montrose are now drying out after a "potent" storm lashed the region over the weekend and on Monday.
Close to two dozen people on foot near Bridal Veil Pass had to hike out, and the San Miguel County Sheriff's Office even sent out a drone to check for a person who was reported as climbing the Via Ferrata when Monday's storm hit.

THE 'TIGER KING' zoo was raided by investigators in search of human remains a couple weeks ago after two cadaver dogs alerted their handlers of potential human remains at the site. So on this International Tiger Day, catch up on the latest in the Exotic Animal Park story.

REVITALIZATION is coming to alleyway of Block 93 in Montrose.
Inspired by alleyways in Fort Collins, the ideas for the Block 93 Project involve colored pavement, new or preserved murals, added lighting and seating, bike racks and other amenities designed to attract walking traffic to the area.

A LITTLE HUMOR featured in today's newspaper.
When I saw this image, it reminded me of "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown." Fall harvest festivals are a fun beginning to the holiday season with family. I love going through corn mazes and searching through a field to pick the perfect pumpkin, but will that change with COVID-19?
There is a lot of uncertainty as to what this fall will look like, but I really hope we can all continue our holiday traditions.
