Good afternoon, Montrose! This is Anna Lynn Winfrey, the newest member of the team at the Daily Press. This newsletter is my first since moving here last week, but I was writing them every day last spring while I was finishing my degree at New College of Florida in Sarasota.
I'm originally from Denver and a 5th-generation Coloradan. In my free time, I enjoy hanging out with my pals, baking sourdough bread, cooking elaborate meals and cross-stitching. Also, I'm learning how to play the accordion!
I've had a fantastic time getting to know Montrose so far. I've eaten pizza from Colorado Boy, grabbed breakfast from Backstreet Bagels and sipped coffee at San Juan Brews. Email me (annalynnw@montrosepress.com) if you have any suggestions for other places to visit around town.
I'm very excited to be living on the Western Slope and even more excited to enjoy the nicer weather this weekend!
Delta deputy not charged in fatal shooting: At a press conference earlier today in Delta, District Attorney Seth Ryan said that Deputy Nolan Davis had acted in self-defense when he fatally shot Paige Schmidt Pierce in April.
Davis fired eight shots into Pierce's windshield and car on a private drive off of Colorado Highway 92 near Hotchkiss. The shooting happened in view of three witnesses, including someone on a ride-along.
Protesters, including members of Pierce's family, gathered outside of the press conference. "You're the cops, not God," Pierce's brother Robbie Schmidt said. Read the full story here.
The commission also made a few changes to the existing map. The 3rd district, currently represented by Lauren Boebert, would pick up Eagle, Summit, Grand, Park and Teller counties, but drop a cluster of counties in the southeast part of the current boundary.
To-go alcohol approved through 2025: Yesterday, Gov. Jared Polis signed a bill into law that formally allows restaurants to serve alcoholic beverages to-go.
The Colorado Restaurants Association lobbied for the bill, which they said would help the industry recover from estimated losses of over $3 billion statewide. The bill passed the general assembly with near-unanimous bipartisan support.
