Happy Tuesday, Montrose! Justin here with your newsletter for today. There's a lot going on around the state and around our country. I'll update you on some of the big stories.
Yesterday, Governor Jared Polis signed into law a bill which will prohibit use of Native American mascots at public schools. As we know, Montrose High School's mascot is the Indians. The school is moving forward with plans to come into compliance with the new law, but it's no easy task. Luca Field, an incoming senior, told staff writer Anna Lynn Winfrey last week that, "personally, it's going to be hard to see the mascot go because it's such a staple in the high school community."
Florida tower collapse: There's not really any good news out of this story, as 150 people are still missing. More information has surfaced after the highrise fell last week, leaving at least 11 dead so far. Just months before the catastrophe, the board president for Champlain Towers South sent a letter to neighbors detailing the deteriorating state of the building.
Meanwhile, the Pacific Northwest is literally melting as roads buckle and more infrastructure collapses amid a record-setting heat wave. A buddy of mine who works in Seattle told me he wasn't prepared for it. He said all he can do is point two fans at himself and hope for the best. The fact is that many who live in the Pacific Northwest just don't have air conditioning.
I went to the Farmers Market this past weekend and grabbed a bite to eat at The Buttered Biscuit food truck. They have locations in both Montrose and Grand Junction. The truck can often be found parked outside San Juan Brews downtown. They make fluffy biscuits and have delicious fried chicken. I forgot to take a photo of my chicken biscuit because it was too delicious.
Get outside. I did this past weekend with my pal Aspen, and it was great. We hiked Dallas Trail, near Blue Lakes, past Ridgway. It's been a couple years since I went up that way. It's always crowded at the trailheads, but once you get down the trail, you remember why you came. Here are a couple photos from the hike.. Everything was green and lush. The weather was a little stormy, but cool, and the flowers were blooming everywhere.

If you scanned the codes with your phone, they took you to the video of body cam footage and the district attorney's full report.
