Good afternoon, Montrose.

Hi and hello, Cassie here with your newsletter. Did you know it takes between 252 to 411 licks to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop? It totally depends on whether it's made by machine or human, but hey, the more you know.

Montrose High School needs a new mascot:
A bill banning Native American mascots at public schools in Colorado will soon hit Gov. Jared Polis' desk. Unless schools have a formal agreement with a Native American tribe about their mascot before June 30 of this year, they will have to instate a new mascot by June 1, 2022. You can read the story from our new staff writer Anna Lynn Winfrey here.

City Council's regular meeting saw a full house:

Cobble Creek residents showed up to express their concerns about the HUB project, under development by Matt Miles, to city council members at Tuesday night's meeting. A total of 15 speakers used their 3 minutes of speaking time during the public comment portion of the meeting. Many residents spoke on their concerns, including over decreased home values, use-by-right grievances, wildfire evacuations and traffic in the area if the 500-unit apartment complex is to move forward with development. Our staff writer Josue Perez has been following the story. You can read more about it here.

The Rotary Amphitheater is coming along.

Public Works Manager Jim Scheid told me a few days ago that the project is on track, under budget and ahead of schedule. At the time, workers had poured most of the stage and cut most of the bowl area. This photo was snapped during Saturday's Black Canyon Classics car show. You can read the latest update on the project's progress here.

FUNC Fest was a hit.

Lisa Kuczmarski, the director at the Office of Business and tourism, estimated roughly 5,000 people showed up to the festival at Riverbottom Park Saturday. So many showed up that Colorado Boy provided extra kegs of beer when drink vendors ran out. The festival kicked off the first of many summer events in the area and was welcomed by the community after the coronavirus pandemic saw the event canceled last year. See photos from FUNC and the Black Canyon Classics annual car show here.
