Hi and hello! Cassie here with your daily newsletter. Things to know: - Not all ADHD cases are the same. They range in severity and symptoms.
- There's three types: Inattentive, Hyperactive and Combined type
- It's not limited to children, or even boys. In fact, 5% of adults in the U.S. have ADHD and many women aren't diagnosed until they're older. There's treatment, but it can't be outgrown.
- Although named for attention deficit behaviors, ADHD is better described as a disorder impacting a person's executive function. Those with ADHD can focus on topics, subjects, hobbies, etc. that they are currently immersed in, but channeling their focus is the real challenge.
- Overall: the ADHD brain connects and communicates differently than neurotypical brains. Symptoms can include "spacing out," impulsivity, forgetful, easily distracted, avoids tasks that require additional mental effort over long periods of time, difficulty organizing tasks and activities, has trouble conceptualizing time and space, challenges with relaxing.
- An ADHD diagnosis doesn't mean the individual isn't intelligent or capable. They may need adjustments or accommodations to function at their best.
Not everyone can "just leave" an abusive situation: Our staff writer, Katharhynn, spoke with Latimer House, Hilltop's domestic violence and sexual assault services organization. Latimer House noted that financial pressures and manipulation are just two factors among several that keep domestic abuse victims silent. The service is implementing a way to help victims without involving law enforcement if they wish. Latimer House crisis line: 1-844-990-5500 (Montrose, Delta and Ouray counties) or 970-241-6704 in Mesa County. These reports can be kept confidential.
