The China balloon affair... It was quite interesting to watch the Sunday morning news shows. Watching representatives from each political party spin the whole affair toward their liking. Republicans like Senator Tom Cotton calling the decision to shoot down the balloon over the Atlantic Ocean weak. "I think President Biden was hoping not to take any confrontational action towards the Chinese communist. He wants to continue to develop what he called the momentum from his meeting with Xi Jinping in Bali last November, even though China has never taken any steps to try to bring down the temperature." Cotton said. Rep Mike Turner from a Republican from Ohio and Chair of the House Intel Committee had this to say on Meet the Press, "I mean, the president allowed this to go across our most sensitive sites, and wasn't even going to tell the American public. If you hadn't broken this story, the American public would not have even known. There was no attempt to notify Congress, no attempt to put together the Gang of Eight. I think this administration lacks urgency." Meanwhile Democrats such as Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg defended the President. The order was given to shoot it down Wednesday when the military deemed there was a good time to do so. Senator Marco Rubio believes it should have been taken down over the Aleutian Islands of Alaska. It depends on why the President waited so long. Jim Geraghty of the National Review in his 'Morning Jolt' newsletter speculated several reasons including the administration wanting to track the path of the balloon. Here's his take. The Dems pointed out that there were three times the spy balloon showed up during Trump's administration. According to Geraghty's report it never penetrated this far into the United States. The whole incident didn't become news fodder until the Billings Gazette publish the photos. Good for community newspapers once again.
On the lighter side of balloon affairs, Delta will be hosting a balloon festival 4th of July weekend. Right now festivities start July 3 at 9am and end July 4 at 10:30pm at Confluence Park. Thank you for reading, Dennis Anderson, Publisher
