Wild Horse Wine & Whiskey offers a taste of Colorado on East Main Street

Apparently there's still snow at high elevation, and no, I wasn't prepared
Image
Maybe it should have been intuitive, since I literally drive home every day facing the snow-capped mountains, that if I were to climb one of those mountains, I might encounter snow.

I didn't think that through. So this weekend, when I went out for my first real hike of the season with a group of buddies, I got soaked. I'm talking, trudging for probably over half a mile with a 15% grade in 3-4 feet of snow. While wearing a T-shirt.

It was weird. Because it's the end of May, I'm a Rhode Island girl, and while we have snow, we certainly did not have mountains. So why the heck would I expect to encounter snow on a leisurely climb up 3,000 feet? You tell me.

So don't be like me, the outdoors writer who had to dig her foot out of a snowbank with a hiking pole, and prepare to encounter snow at high elevation for the next few trips. And if you're looking for more trip inspo and trail planning tips (which I should have followed) check out our last few Outdoors sections.

But on the bright side, we should have one heck of a wildflower season this year.

I'll admit- the payoff was pretty cool.
Cheers,

Rock goddess herself, Stevie

Image
I was reading through the paper Wednesday, and Stephen Woody's column "The Notebook" reminded me that today is Stevie Nicks birthday.

To this day, she is one of my biggest personal inspirations not only in fashion and poetry but in the way she carries compassion, tenderness, and vulnerability in her heart.

It shouldn't come as a surprise, I guess. Big music fans, my parents named both me and my younger sister after classic rock songs. My sister, named after a John Lennon song, went on to become a huge Beatles fan (I risk ridicule by admitting I prefer The Stones) and I, being named after one of Stevie's first hits, loved the Fleetwood Mac singer's mysticism and lyricism from the start.

One of the best days of my life was last Labor Day weekend, when my dreams came true and I saw her perform at Snowmass... and I got to share the day with my parents.

You can tell a musician has a big impact when as soon as they walk onto the stage that very first time the whole crowd starts crying.

Everyone around us had their own personal connection with Stevie, and that's another reason why I adore her.

That night she also played the heart wrenching ballad "Soldier's Angel," dedicated to those who serve.

- Have a great Memorial Day weekend, Rhiannon

Those who serve

My paternal grandfather served during the Korean War, and he passed away when I was a kid. Although I still remember his gruff voice and love of wafer cookies.

My maternal grandfather served in the Vietnam war; he is still going strong today, hunting and working on cars and giving the best advice.

I thank both of them and all veterans for their service, especially those who lost their lives while serving.
