Apparently there's still snow at high elevation, and no, I wasn't prepared Maybe it should have been intuitive, since I literally drive home every day facing the snow-capped mountains, that if I were to climb one of those mountains, I might encounter snow. I didn't think that through. So this weekend, when I went out for my first real hike of the season with a group of buddies, I got soaked. I'm talking, trudging for probably over half a mile with a 15% grade in 3-4 feet of snow. While wearing a T-shirt. It was weird. Because it's the end of May, I'm a Rhode Island girl, and while we have snow, we certainly did not have mountains. So why the heck would I expect to encounter snow on a leisurely climb up 3,000 feet? You tell me. So don't be like me, the outdoors writer who had to dig her foot out of a snowbank with a hiking pole, and prepare to encounter snow at high elevation for the next few trips. And if you're looking for more trip inspo and trail planning tips (which I should have followed) check out our last few Outdoors sections. But on the bright side, we should have one heck of a wildflower season this year. I'll admit- the payoff was pretty cool. Cheers, Kylea Henseler, Staff Reporter kyleah@montrosepress.com QUICK LINKS |
