My sign of spring
There are plenty indications of spring each year — although it seems to be taking its sweet time in kicking into gear for 2023. That's OK with me (in a few months, I will lament how hot it is) as long as it doesn't get too cold to destroy what my go-to symbol of spring is. I give you: the lilac. Tree or bush, nothing beats its beauty (and for me, the darker the purple, the better). I am no green thumb (plants fear me, I think), but I was so happy to see the flowers unfurl this year after a slow start. We have a large row of 'em in our back parking lot, and I took a few home for some fragrance. Curious about lilacs? Local garden centers can help you out, as can the CSU Extension Office. There is also this handy article, published in the Farmer's Almanac. Did you know the blooms aren't limited to purple hues? Some lilac varieties bloom pink, white, and even yellow. They belong to the same family as jasmine - another favorite of mine - and olive trees, according unto Better Homes & Gardens. BHG reports that there's even a link to Pan of Greek mythology: he'd taken a shine to a nymph, but it was a hard no from her. She turned herself into a lilac tree to avoid him! Her name? Syringa. The scientific name of the lilac? Syringa vulgaris.
