The scourge of pancreatic cancer By now, you've probably heard TV host Jerry Springer has passed away. Springer, known for his tell-all, tabloid-style TV show, was also a former mayor of Cincinnati. And a grandchild of Holocaust victims; a father; a friend to many — a human being. Springer, 79, died last week; the cause was later revealed as pancreatic cancer. I watched this disease kill my father. It is a scourge, and it is deadly because it is so hard to diagnose in time for effective treatment. Pancreatic cancer will strike an estimated 64,000 Americans this year, according to predictions shared by the American Cancer Society. This year, an estimated 50,550 will die from the disease. Early symptoms can be non-specific, making it harder to accurately diagnose before it has reached advanced stages. People usually have no symptoms until the tumor has spread to other organs. By then, it might present as jaundice (yellowing of eyes and skin); dark urine; light-colored or greasy stools; gut or back pain; weight loss and poor appetite; nausea; enlarged liver or gallbladder; blood clots, diabetes … As you can see, these symptoms can have other causes (and often do). But if you are experiencing these symptoms, my obviously layperson advice is: get an appointment with your doctor right away. Nobody wants to lose you. — Katharhynn, from the newsroom This is my dad, Tom, during a moving sale in April, 2010. He had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in September of 2009. He's adding his signature to a decorative sign he'd painted after retiring from his commercial art business. This sign was purchased by a woman who, if my memory is correct, had lost her brother to pancreatic cancer. My father died May 22, 2010.
