| | Man's best friend (and also cats) People love animals, and a lot of them seem to love us as well. Or at least consider us curious. This week, Katharhynn relayed to us the spectacle that is Kitten Yoga. I knew it was coming (she had requested to borrow my yoga mat and was quickly rebuffed), but still was unprepared for the visual of kittens 'doing yoga.' It looked relaxing enough, but I'm not sure how much yoga was accomplished — cats do what they want, and maybe they don't want to do yoga. Dogs: now there's an animal that'll do some yoga with you! Anytime I try to get some stretching done, my dog is right there with me, breathing noxious dog breath right in my face. Excellent breath control though. But he sweats through his tongue, which I assume is why he always starts licking my face. It's kinda distracting, if lovable. While dogs might make yoga tougher than a herd of cats, they do make good therapy dogs. Recently in a guest column, Sue Danner shared about Morning Star Therapy Dogs, about how the local organization began bringing dogs to Montrose High School in response to an accidental death of a student. Initiated by school counselor Krista Brundage after she attended a workshop back in 2015 through the American School Counseling Association (ASCA) on the benefits of interactions with dogs to relieve stress from trauma, the local practice has become known as Therapy Dog Thursdays. It's not surprising that animals — dogs, even cats — make us feel better. They lack a lot of the qualities that make humans a little tough to be around sometimes; animals, in general, aren't cruel or mean-spirited. For instance, recently in Gunnison the authorities encountered some folks with a house full of animals — dogs, cats, chickens, ducks, all kinds — all in cages and overall pitiful condition. Why would people treat these animals this way? They certainly wouldn't treat us that way. Most of them would probably prefer to enjoy yoga with us.
