Marveling at the mundane ...

Jeremy Morrison
Everywhere I look, I see things with new eyes. Or, maybe I'm just seeing new things with these old eyes.

This morning, driving along Highway 50, I come upon four cowboys, slung low in the saddle, high on the horse, herding cattle down the road. It felt as if my Subaru had slipped through a time portal and into the West of yore. No, my friend tells me, this is normal for the area.

The other day, I spotted a magical beast with ammonite-like horns. Straight from Narnia, I presume! Nah, it's a bighorn sheep, they're around.

And down at the Montrose Water Sports Park last weekend, I sat and gawked at a group of folk river surfing — surfing on a river! Surfing, I'm well familiar with, but the concept of paddling out into a rifling river to catch a wave? This is new to me and it's kinda blowing my mind.

My friend laughs at these observations. She tells me I'm seeing things through a child-like lens, fascinated with the wonder of everything new. Go with it, she says, revel in it.

Alright, I'll do it. Why not? It's fun. I love having my mind blown. And it seems that these days, exploring this new-to-me region, my mind gets blown pretty easy and by pretty much every new thing — like how towns have letters adorning a hillside! That 'M' that Montrose has watching over the Uncompahgre, it's, like, so big!

Swings in weather delay corn planting as runoff fills canals
If John Harold sees corn harvest begin before his birthday, he will be a happy man. Weather — more snow than expected and a cooler spring — delayed planting for the signature "Olathe Sweet" sweet corn his Tuxedo Corn Co. and its growers plant each year. Although it's going in the ground now, harvest will be later than usual.
