Tacos and Ice Cream
I'm moving out of Ridgway and closer to work soon, so before I left I had to do a couple last things...as if I won't live less than an hour away.

One of them was eating out one last time, so I went for the Korean BBQ tacos at Gnar. Yes, I know they just had an outbreak, but ya know what?

They cooperated with the state, replaced their producers, and 5 days later I haven't been sick yet. I suppose I'm not quite in the clear, but so far so good, and the tacos were delicious. Hopefully I won't regret this, and this local business a lot of people have come to know and love will move past it too.

I also had to pick up a few more pints of Brown Chicken Brown Cow Ice Cream from Cafe Ridgway a la Mode, and while I did indeed say pints plural, they are all gone now.

The stuff is made by Ouray-based ice climber Dawn Glanc, and it's without a doubt the best, creamiest ice cream I've ever had. I don't even like mocha, but I've killed two pints of mocha hazelnut cookie this week, and the only reason it wasn't more is because I bought the last one.

Luckily, I won't have to go as far for this, because Dawn recently started selling the ice cream at County Line Liquor and Mercantile in Colona. I'll be stopping by frequently, and we just may have to reach out to Dawn for an upcoming business story now that the good stuff is so close to town.

Cheers,

What a weekend! | From the Newsroom

Weekend vibes

There's nothing like a Monday to make you yearn for the weekend — especially a weekend like this past one.

The Welcome Home Alliance for Veterans gave us a concert for the books, when it brought back the annual Freedom Sings Colorado songs — plus American Idol runner-up and talented artist HunterGirl, on Saturday night.

HunterGirl spoke to our freelancer Gunnison Clamp, whose photo is above, explaining how much the military means to her. It was her third time in Montrose; HunterGirl also works with Freedom Sings, a program that promotes healing of trauma through music. This time around, well-known songwriters brought their craft to town during a retreat with local veterans, whose stories then then presented — in song — on the Montrose Rotary Amphitheater stage Saturday night.

And, in the words of the late TV pitchman Billy Mays: But wait! There' s more.

Saturday also brought Montrose "Rock the Block," a Habitat for Humanity effort to promote our many nonprofits and the hardworking folks in them who help so many others. It was a morning and afternoon packed with sno-cones, waterslides, a peep inside a state patrol vehicle, vendors, live music and live performances. You can see the kiddos below really enjoyed the bubble machine. I was jealous of the kids on the waterslides, but also very grateful for the Montrose Lions Club, whose members tossed me a cold bottle of water.

There was art, too. The many talented hands at Montrose Center for the Arts painted and created right there on Main Street, with their work going up for auction later in the day. You might check at MCA, 11 S. Park Ave., to see if any pieces are left for you to snag. Below, Nancy Shorter works on a lovely watercolor.

Did I mention the farmers' market? That weekly event was in full swing, and was a great complement to Rock the Block, just feet away!

Capping off the evening? After the concert, Boys & Girls Club treated anyone who wanted to come back to Centennial Plaza to a free showing of "Moana."

I'll just say, if a good time somehow wasn't had by all, it's no fault of the hosts!

Vibe as old as time

You aren't limited to events other people put on — in Montrose, you can find your own happy. For me, the Uncompahgre River never disappoints. Here it is on Sunday afternoon.
