I found the flux capacitor!
There's a special way the sun shines upon classic cars, with the light dancing off mirrored chrome and paint so slick you might slip if you're not careful. This weekend, the Black Canyon Classics car show is rolling through Montrose, and on Saturday a field of classics were on display at Cerise Park, lounging in the sun and soaking up plenty of oohhhs and ahhhs. Among the classics were lots of hot rods and VWs and hulking metal beasts with muscular engines that could probably propel you to the moon. And most of them gleamed in the sun.
But among the field of classics was one specimen that wasn't gleaming in the sun. It's brushed stainless steel body shrugged off the shine — too cool — preferring instead to flex its gullwing doors, giving the impression that if the mood were to strike it could fly up into the sky and kiss the sun itself. But just like Icarus of Greek mythology, this car — a DeLorean DMC-12 — cannot fly to the sun. In fact, this mythic automobile is notoriously underpowered and riddled with performance issues. Regardless, the DeLorean is still sexy as all git-out. And rare — there were less than 9,000 made during its 1981-1983 production run. And five of those were 24K-gold plated. But that's not why this child of the 1980s' heart nearly leapt out of my shirt when I spied the DeLorean at the car show. No, just like pretty much everyone else that strolled past the DeLorean, I knew that if I could just get this car up to 88 mph, I could time travel. Heavy. And, yeah — Great Scott, Marty! — I think there may be a problem with the Earth's gravitational pull in the future, but maybe we'll get into that some other time. After assuring the DeLorean's owner I'd keep it under 88 mph, he allowed me to enter its gullwing doors and sink into the leather seat. I thought for a moment about cranking up the flux capacitor and charging into the distant past or far-off future or maybe just straight into the sun ... but then I reconsidered. The present, here on this bright, beautiful Saturday in Montrose is pretty nice itself. I've already experienced the past, and it's probably best to let the future unfold in its own time. Besides, I was already starting to dream of that VW Syncro Vanagon across the field ... Have a Good One, Jeremy Morrison, managing editor
