Remembering Dad in the great outdoors Sunday was Father's Day, and I hope all of the dads — and the men who step up to fill those shoes — enjoyed their day. I'm no longer able to celebrate my dad, Tom, in person because of pancreatic cancer, but I celebrated him in spirit, by connecting with nature; something he valued highly. I found my happy place just down the road, at the Dallas Creek Day Use Area of Ridgway State Park. It's a great site to launch a paddle board, but also gives you an easy hike up through the pinon-juniper and sage, and down through some oak and willow. I parked at the opposite end from the bridge to the trail and walked for about 90 minutes, just absorbing a truly beautiful day. Then it was a quick trip over to the swim beach to cool off. I hope everyone enjoyed their Sunday, whether they were celebrating dads who are still with us, or those who have gone on. Good dads enrich us all — and so does readily accessible nature.
