Get rad ... Recently, I wrote an article for our Outdoors section about the sport of climbing and local climbing opportunities. Working on that story put me in a great mood despite the fact I know little about the sport. Like almost everything here, there's so many cool local climbers, beautiful spots and nonprofits working to make our outdoor spaces and communities the best they can be. I chatted with Dolgio Nergui of the Ouray Climbers Alliance for this article, someone I met while I was still reporting down in Ouray County. The group does a great job bringing the local climbing community together and improving climbing spots like Rotary Park, and it was awesome to reconnect with her. Another past contact I connected with this week is legendary Ouray-based climber Jim Donini, whose biography "Survival is Not Assured" comes out this month. Last time I saw Jim, I interviewed him at his Ouray home from the coach, chatting for over an hour about his first ascents all over the world– and how he was apparently the first white dude photographed naked in National Geographic. Allegedly. Now in his 80s, I think, Jim still has a wicked sense of humor and takes laps on the Via Ferrata a few times a week for fun. He's one of the coolest people I've gotten to interview since I came out here, and I'm hoping to get an article about him and his new book in the press soon. Before I get a chance to, he'll be holding a release party for his biography May 28 at Basecamp Ouray from 6 to 8 p.m., so if you're in the area it's worth stopping by! Another cool person I got to work with this week is local climber Mya Wilcox, who contributed an awesome guide to local climbing spots to our outdoor section this week. I've climbed outside exactly once (I'm hoping to change that this year), so Mya's insight is awesome to have, because I really couldn't tell ya where to go without the help of google. Cheers for now, Kylea QUICK LINKS |
