Middle Bridge to reopen July 3 ...

Image

Just ahead of the Fourth of July holiday weekend, the Middle Bridge will be reopened to limited traffic. The bridge, spanning the Blue Mesa Reservoir on U.S. 50 between Montrose and Gunnison, has been cut off since April following an inspection that revealed cracks in the structure's steel.

U.S. Senator John Hickenlooper, along with Jason Smith, regional transportation director for CDOT, District 3, visited the Middle Bridge this week, where the senator noted how he would take stories back to Washington D.C. of how local communities worked together to overcome the challenges created by the closed bridge.

"We heard the stories about, you know, kids having to take the boat to get to school, the hospital being stretched in every different direction to make sure that they were connected, and yet the stories we've heard again and again are of people working together to solve the problems," Hickenlooper said.

For the holiday weekend, July 3-7, CDOT is opening the Middle Bridge for 12 hours a day. Staring on July 8, those windows decrease to two-hour time frames twice a day. In all opening, a pilot vehicle will lead alternative lanes of traffic across the bridge.Read more about the limited reopening of the Middle Bridge here

Local doctor named head team physician for Team USA at 2024 Olympic games in Paris

Image

Dr. Gloria Beim, an orthopedic surgeon with Gunnison Valley Health, has been appointed as the head team physician for Team USA at the Summer Olympic Games in Paris, 2024.nd this isn't her first time as an Olympic physician — since 1997, this will be her fourth time at the Olympics, including serving as the chief medical officer for Team USA at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games and severing as the chief medical officer or head team physician in four Paralympic Games.

Pretty cool, right? Here's something else about Dr. Beim that's pretty cool: she makes great balloon animals.

This winter the kids and I were skiing at Crested Butte, when my son took a fall and broke his leg.
The break was severe enough to require surgery and we took a trip down to the hospital in Gunnison. When we learned that Dr. Beim would be my son's surgeon, a friend who's familiar with the local doctor reacted as if we'd just won the surgical jackpot and proceeded to explain the Olympic credentials.

So, obviously the notion of having gotten a world-class surgeon is pretty cool, but when Dr. Beim arrived she had no intentions of resting on her Olympic laurels — she immediately got to work inflating balloons and, by the time she was finished, creating an incredible Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle. I was in awe! This thing had various colors of balloons, for the shell and bandana and such, just amazing!

I don't know where such accomplished people even find the time to learn to make balloon animals. I feel good if I get this newsletter written and, even so, find it challenging to make myself breakfast.

Anyway, I forget exactly where I was going with that, but, remember, while we do have an Olympic-level doctor here on the Western Slope, she's also really, really good at this other thing, making balloon animals.
