School's in session

For many of you, that means packing lunches and loading the kids onto the bus once again.

For us, it means ramping up coverage of everything going on in our local school district after a relative summer break.

And there's plenty. Montrose Schools have welcomed new staff and coaches, including a new girls volleyball coach and athletic director at Olathe and a new cheer coach at Montrose.

Some of our littlest residents will benefit from the second year of state-funded universal preschool, while the school board is looking to get voters on board for a redesigned high school.

For football fans, Olathe is also bringing back Friday Night Lights- but we'll get to that next week.

When school's out, however, many working parents face the question of how to keep their kids safe and entertained until they clock out.

In tomorrow's paper, we look at how the Rec District has stepped up to address Montrose's after school needs, tripling capacity in its elementary school program.

The district has a middle school program too, based at the Rec Center itself and featuring self-guided activities and field trips. But, it might not happen, as the district needs five more students to register to make it feasible.

There's still time left to sign up your kids and tweens, so we wanted to put the word out one last time in case any more families are looking for affordable after school options.

You can read more and sign up here.

Cheers,
Kylea from the Newsroom
