Get wild this weekend ... Do you feel like getting a little wild this weekend? If so, maybe you should hit up author Jon Waterman's presentation Sunday at the Montrose Pavilion. Waterman — who collaborated with National Geographic for his latest project, "Atlas of Wild America" — likes wild places. He likes to get off the beaten path. "The wilder and the more remote, the better," the author recently told Montrose Daily Press reporter Kylea Henseler. Waterman grew up nurturing a deep appreciation for nature, and eventually became what he describes as an "immersion journalist." The work he does tends to be longterm and participatory — for example, "Arctic Crossing," another National Geographic collaboration, involved spending considerable time in Alaska and then making a 2,000 mile voyage in 10 months over the course of three years. During his presentation in Montrose — scheduled for Sunday, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Montrose Pavilion — Waterman will discuss "Atlas of Wild America." This most recent work highlights around three dozen official and unofficial wild areas in America, and constitutes the second book in a trilogy series — the author describes it as a "dream project."
