Hello friends 🌻 It's been three years since Russia invaded Ukraine, sparking the world's largest human displacement crisis. And in that time, some Ukrainian refugees have made a home in Montrose. We've covered the local impact of the ongoing war, from 7-year old Amelia Fishering launching Sunflowers for Ukraine to local residents forming the nonprofit, Friends of Ukraine. We here in the newsroom have had the privilege of getting to know people like Ukrainian-American Neonila "Augusta" Martyniuk and the Stepanchenko family. Their perspectives are an invaluable connection to our neighbors across the globe. Recently, Nataliia Kovaliv shared how she and family fled Ukraine and found refuge in Montrose. So where are we now? Ukraine's Independence Day is on Saturday, and the families and individuals who have made their home in Montrose want to celebrate with the community! Stop by Riverbottom Park between 12:30 - 2:30 p.m. to hear our Ukrainian friends share their stories.
