Good times on the cob

Crop problems due to pests, and seemingly relentless monsoons didn't afflict the annual Olathe Sweet Corn Festival, which was well-attended Saturday. People flocked to Cerise Park and lined up for ears of roasted Olathe Sweet sweet corn  — and that line moved relatively fast. There was a station set up for corn distribution and, under another tent, tables for adding salt, butter and other toppings. Worked like a charm!

For some, snacking on the provided corn wasn't quite enough. These brave folks sat down in groups of six to see how many ears they could down in one minute. And there was a catch: event organizers slathered whatever topping they chose on the corn, including hot sauce and ketchup.

Seeing the end results of a large event is always impressive. What goes into it, though? Not always obvious. Hats off to the many volunteers — and sponsors — who brought us the Sweet Corn Festival.
