As the November election nears, we're working to familiarize you with the candidates seeking public office and your vote. This week, we featured a profile on Cole Buerger, a Democrat seeking Colorado's District 5 state senate seat.

Buerger is running against Republican Marc Catlin, with both hoping to land incumbent Perry Wills' seat. The candidate was in Montrose last weekend to speak at the Women's March Gathering for Action event, and took a few minutes to chat with myself and publisher Dennis Anderson at San Juan Coffee downtown.

The boundaries of District 5 have shifted since the last election due to redistricting — with Montrose now encompassed within the senate district — and while Buerger takes a realistic look at the Republican-heavy territory, he is also optimistic about his chances to win. Even in Montrose, which he considers a demographically evolving area and one that's crucial to his path to victory.

Read our profile of Buerger here.
