Ways to ponder

Every so often, along comes a story that is just a great read — one that informs, but also sparks the interest of people who aren't typically aware of the subject at hand.

Last week, reporter Kylea Henseler gave us one: How Ouray's Gold Mountain Via Ferrata climbing route came to be. As she lays out, rock climber Logan Tyler created the route by hand, giving the region its only private "iron way" of rock and rung courses. It's a fitting addition to the Switzerland of America! If you're a climber, it's a new opportunity. If you're a scaredy cat of dubious physical fitness like me, enjoy it vicariously through Kylea's story, here.

Lane filtering law takes effect

If you drive, you need to know: Motorcycles can legally lane-filter starting on Aug. 7. This is not the same thing as lane-splitting, but everyone should be alert to the changes, and the prospect of motorcyclists pulling alongside of you at stop signs and traffic lights. The state says this reduces the risks of them being struck from behind at traffic lights and signs. Of course, there are rules involved, and you can read about them right here.
