A sneak peek at tomorrow's print edition …

In tomorrow's print edition of the Montrose Daily Press, you can read about efforts to recall Montrose Commissioner Scott Mijares, which passed a notable moment this week, with petitioners delivering signatures to the county clerk and recorder's office; and about an event Thursday in Montrose during which University of Colorado representatives — from Boulder, Denver and Colorado Springs — will be on hand to speak with local high school students about going to college within the CU system.

Reflecting on the South Rim Fire — and feeling optimistic for the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park

Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. Let that soak in a minute before we go on.

Sometimes a person or place or thing becomes so familiar, so easy, so comfortable — that we forget how special they are or it is. Family, friends, spouses can be that way, so close yet taken for granted. Admittedly not everyone is enamored with a place such as a national park, but that same lackadaisical attitude can happen with a special place we cherish. Especially one close to home.

The recent and major fire at the Black Canyon National Park seems to fit this description. The canyon landscape has always been there. In our lifetimes, it was first a national monument then later a national park. It's a short drive from Montrose. You can go most anytime. Its splendor never wanes. Yet maybe we tend to take it for granted.

MHS FOOTBALL PREVIEW: Montrose ready to earn another shot at a football state title — 'We're starting from zero ... we have to work our way up and not get ahead of ourselves'

Getting a taste of a state championship atmosphere have made these Hawks hungry. The Montrose football team put together a remarkable 2024 season, one that ended with just one loss. That defeat came in the Class 4A state championship game as Broomfield beat the Red Hawks 35-28.
There are several reasons to think the Red Hawks can return to Canvas Stadium in Fort Collins. Among those reasons is the makeup of the roster, which will see a lot of returning talent from last year's state runner-up team.
But the big thing that coach Brett Mertens is trying to emphasize is that even with a lot of playmakers coming back, nothing is given on the football field. Each team has to go out there and earn their accolades.
"It's a different team," Mertens said. "Every year is different. Last year we probably would've hung our hat on that offensive line, and we still will [this year]. But when we look at the top kids coming back, it's running back and skill players."
