To call the Black Canyon being on fire a bummer is a major understatement The park is, of course, a beloved part of our community, a natural wonder and a boon for tourism. But, Montrose has so much more to offer, including plenty of views, hiking trails, campsites and water access that aren't impacted by the fire. This is the message local businesses are hoping to send, as news of the fire (sometimes very poorly understood or reported news) impacted some businesses in the tourism industry this summer. Multiple local leaders and business owners noted getting phone calls from would-be visitors that believed the city itself was on fire. The issue came up at this week's DART meeting, and members of the business community and the City plan to join together to promote each other and everything Montrose has to offer. The plan is to create a branded campaign, which is not yet fully developed. But, one point business and city leader noted is they're hoping locals, in addition to tourists, will keep some money in the community and support Montrose events and businesses this summer. Of course, we'll keep following the story and covering our local businesses as always, and we'll have more on this in Saturday's paper. Cheers, Kylea from the newsroom |
