| We've had some pretty bleak headlines lately And, of course, it's our job to report these stories. This week, the "Most Read" section of our site has been pretty heavy as articles about crime, abuse, car crashes and our Black Canyon draw the most clicks. It's all important stuff- and lots of good work from my colleagues. But, there's plenty of happy things happening as well. My favorite story to work on this week is all about the Montrose Rec District's new adaptive biking program, which is just the latest in a litany of opportunities MRD has rolled out in the last few years for the local disabled community. Danielle Musser, the district's adaptive and inclusive program leader, is leading the charge. Every time I interview her, it seems like she has years worth of updates to announce, even though we probably chatted just a few months ago. Under her lead, the district has started a handful of Special Olympics teams, planned excursions friendly to all abilities, and raised funds and grants for an ever-growing catalogue of adaptive equipment. The biking program is the newest offering, and features monthly rides for all skill levels. Musser is quickly building a fleet of bikes for all abilities, from recumbent tricycles to hand cycles and multi-rider machines that allow those with cognitive disabilities to pedal along. Views from the trail- Courtesy Danielle Musser We'll have more on the program in Saturday's paper, but for anyone interested, the next ride is Aug. 26 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Ute McNeil Complex near Riverbottom. Registration is $15, and athletes, caregivers or anyone from the community interested in volunteering or trying out the specialty cycles can call or stop by the rec center to sign up.
