Good afternoon! Josue here.

This Saturday is Youth Appreciation Day and there's a full slate of events scheduled around town. Montrose Recreation District has a schedule you can view to coordinate your plans.

I'll be out and about on Saturday, so if you see me at an event, stop by and say hello!

Friday night lights: A week remains before the start of the fall football season for MHS and OHS.

I was at practice for both teams last week and excitement is high. MHS senior Bridger Kurtz said the Indians could have a special season (MHS is ranked No. 7 in 4A in CHSAA's preseason rankings) and new head coach for OHS Tyler Vincent is excited to lead the 2021 group.

A few other sports are underway. MHS softball won both of its games this past Monday, and MHS cross country had its first meet. Grab this Saturday's paper and look for the sports section to read more on your local teams.

Back, back again:
Today marked the first day of school for all students within Montrose County School District, and Staff Writer Anna Lynn Winfrey captured this photo at Pomona Elementary School this morning.

The 2020-2021 school year wasn't a simple one for students or faculty, having to manage through quarantines, hybrid learning and a myriad of other challenges.

Circumstances are still not exactly back to "normal," but there's optimism this school year can smoother, with the school district championing its "better together" mantra.

Best of luck to all Montrose and Olathe students during the 2021-2022 school year!
