What's up, Montrose! Happy Friday. This is Anna Lynn here, writing to you from the newsroom.
I thought that I experienced my last day of back-to-school when I was finishing my senior year of college, but I was wrong. I had so much fun bouncing around schools yesterday to cover the first day of the new school year in Montrose.
At Pomona Elementary, I walked into the gym at Pomona Elementary where some kids were finishing up breakfast before the first bell rang. A new second grader saw my camera and ran over to me. He was super curious about how it worked, so I showed him how to look through it and operate the zoom lens. This was a wholesome reporting moment that will stay with me for a long time.
If you're a student, parent or school staff member, I'd love to hear your thoughts about classes starting up again. Send an email to annalynnw@montrosepress.com or give me a call at 970-252-7031.
Thanks for reading today's newsletter. I hope you have a wonderful weekend!
What's going on with Boebert's campaign finances? The Federal Election Commission is seeking more information about $6,500 in Venmo payments sent from her campaign to Boebert's personal account.
Boebert's office is saying that the charges, later repaid, were "personal expenses" that were erroneously billed to the campaign.
Also, over the past two years, Boebert's husband has made nearly $1 million working as an energy consultant for a company that could be operating thousands of oil wells within the boundaries of the 3rd congressional district.
State prisons now require staff vaccinations. County jails in the 7th Judicial District don't.
Check out Katharhynn's fantastic story about how the Colorado Department of Corrections has mandated staff to get vaccinated because of rate rise of the Delta variant, but all four of the local jails in the 7th Judicial District have not instated vaccine requirements.
"I am not going to mandate that they are vaccinated," Montrose County Sheriff Gene Lillard said. "That is their constitutional right to decide it one way or the other. I am not mandating this."
Coffee futures are rising worldwide, but that won't affect Montrose…yet: COVID-induced supply chain shortages are affecting global supply chains for everything from surfboards to lumber — and coffee.
Josue reached out to local roasters to find out if the global phenomenon is affecting them. Most of them said the bean shortage hadn't affected them yet, but they've experienced some shortages for other vital supplies, such as to-go cups and lids.
