Hey there, Montrose! Justin again, writing to you this Wednesday. We live in colorful Colorado, so most of us have an appreciation for our National Parks, like the one right in our backyard — Black Canyon of the Gunnison.

Today, the National Park Service turns 105 years old. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson signed into law the Organic Act, setting into motion the creation of the federal agency that today oversees 423 parks spanning 85 million acres.

Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park on Facebook posted about the anniversary with a beautiful photo of the some 2 billion-year-old Painted Wall in the canyon. If you've never been, you should visit.

Hotel groundbreaking: You may have already caught this one in today's paper, but development at the Colorado Outdoors project along the Uncompahgre River is moving along. Workers are expected to break ground this month on the planned Fairfield by Marriott hotel. This news comes after Colorado Yurt broke ground on land at Colorado Outdoors for the company's new headquarters just last month.

Quick update: We told you yesterday about nurses and hospital staff protesting a potential vaccine mandate at Montrose Memorial Hospital. We published a more comprehensive story today. Give it a read.

On this day in 2012, the Voyager 1 spacecraft — which was launched in 1977 — made its way into interstellar space, the first craft to do so. Essentially what that means is it made its way into the space between stars, outside the magnetic bubble of our own sun. It's out there somewhere today. If you like this stuff like I do and want to nerd out on it a little bit, here's a bit of a complicated read from the NASA-funded Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California about what the Voyager 1 is teaching us today. And a little bit about the craft and its relationship with Saturn.

The Montrose Wine and Food Festival is coming up. The annual event, which was canceled last year amid the pandemic, benefits the Black Canyon Boys & Girls Club and will take place Sept. 4. Tickets are on sale now.
