Chaos in Afghanistan —

Katharhynn from the newsroom, unfortunately not with good news.

The Taliban has all but retaken Afghanistan, within about a week of the drawdown of U.S. forces.

You can see the latest updates on the situation here, along with a timeline of our 20-year engagement that began after Sept. 11, 2001.

And speaking of 9/11 ... What do you think about the feeling of national unity in the wake of the terror attacks that day 20 years ago and the state of our unity now? Feel free to email me about it: katharhynnh@montrosepress.com

Guess what's open for now? U.S. 50 through Little Blue Creek Canyon.

It will be open for two-way traffic through Aug. 31, with regularly scheduled closures resuming Sept. 1. (The road also will be open to two-way traffic starting noon Sept. 3 and through the Labor Day weekend.)

A stretch of 50 through Little Blue Creek Canyon is undergoing a massive safety improvement, but closures are now on hold to help with the ongoing situation on I-70 through Glenwood Canyon. Mudslides heavily damaged the interstate, which has for now reopened.

You can find more about U.S. 50/Little Blue Creek at us50info.com

Once again — don't feed the bears.

We know you probably don't do that. But "feeding" can also mean leaving food sources within reach (or smelling distance) of Very Hungry Bears.

It is again the time of year where they begin building their fat stores in preparation for hibernation. Bears need an estimated 20,000 calories a day, and like people, they follow the path of least resistance. That means things like your fruit trees, bird feeders, pet food and trash might attract a bruin or two.

An ounce of prevention truly is worth a pound of cure. Learn more about bear-awareness at cpw.state.co.us/bears

Back when ... when things were groovy!
On Aug. 17, 1969, Woodstock Music & Art Fair concluded in Upstate New York. Were you there? Peace!
