Good afternoon! Josue here. Local football at Montrose and Olathe high schools are underway, but the NFL season is slated to kick off a few weeks from now. Teddy Bridgewater was named the starting quarterback for the Denver Broncos earlier this week. He had been competing with Drew Lock for the starting job. The move is somewhat a surprise — and not — for Broncos fans.
We'll see how Bridgewater fairs when the Broncos play the New York Giants on Sunday, Sept. 12.
Silver jubilee for Tuttle: This weekend, the True Grit Café in Ridgway will celebrate 25 years since owner Tammee Tuttle bought the café. Of course, many are familiar with the connection to the 1969 film "True Grit," filmed in and around Ridway and Ouray County. MDP contributor Stephen Woody spoke with Tuttle and the two talked the café's history, how its become a "destination restaurant" and how the popular spot is doing today.
MHS kickoff: The first football game for MHS is tonight at 7 p.m. in Grand Junction, against Grand Junction Central. If you're unable to head up there, you can listen to the game live by tuning in to network1sports.com/station/kubc (580 AM and 104.5 FM in Montrose).
MHS fans can still check out some local sports this week. The MHS volleyball varsity team plays tonight — I'll be there, so check out the recap in Saturday's sports section — at 6:30 p.m. Varsity softball and boys soccer play at MHS tomorrow at 5 p.m.
Cast your votes: Starting tomorrow, voting is live for Best of the Valley. Nominations end today at 6 p.m., so if you have any last minute noms, you can still cast them. Voting, which starts at 7 a.m., runs through Sept. 3 until 6 p.m.
Montrose trivia: Ya'll have been doing so well with trivia that we're out of NABUR T-shirts. But we're getting more soon, so keep sending your answers to josuep@montrosepress.com. Which actors starred as Deputy U.S. Marshal Rooster Cogburn in the 1969 and 2010 versions of "True Grit"?
