Hello Montrose! I was walking past the Fox Theater today and instantly remembered how great of a film "Dune" is, which released in cinemas and HBO Max last week and is currently playing at the Fox.

That's why it was welcome news to see the announcement this week that "Dune: Part Two" will release in October 2023.

Part One was a fantastic cinematic experience. As for Part Two, all we know right now is that they're Dune the dang thing.

I know, I'll see myself out...

Packed Halloweekend: Starting today, local businesses and organizations are hosting planned Halloween events for the Montrose community.

Magic Circle Players is hosting a comedic melodrama of vampire mishaps tomorrow night at Magic Circle Theater and trick or treating on Main Street in Montrose starts at 10 a.m. on Saturday.

Check out a list of events here.

Creating connections: I stopped by Alt Space Coworking in Montrose last week and learned more about what's going on at the space, formerly of Proximity, a coworking space, and it was clear why remote work and coworking spaces have seen increased interest over the past 18 months.

I also spoke with Bonnie and Brian Watson, co-founders of Alt Space Coworking. The Watsons shared what they hope Alt Space can provide for the Western Slope as they aim to help entrepreneurs and the local workforce.

You can read more about the Watsons' venture here.

Mo-Town Knows: Episode 5 of Mo-Town Knows is tonight and I had the honor of speaking with Jeff Keehfuss, broker/owner of Berkshire Hathaway Home Services, on the current state of the housing market in Montrose.

It starts at 6 p.m. and you can tune in on Facebook, our website or NABUR.

You can listen to Mo-Town Knows wherever you get your podcasts. Just search "Mo-Town Knows."

Before you go: Montrose High School boys soccer will play against Denver North today at 5:30 p.m. in the first round of the 4A boys soccer state tournament.

You can tune in to watch the livestream here, though an $11 subscription is required to view the game. Otherwise, look out for a recap in the paper.

What are your thoughts on the school board waiving compensation?

A law passed at the state level earlier this year allows school board members to be paid up tot $150 per day no more than five days a week. However, the school board for Montrose County School District voted a few weeks ago not to activate any form of compensation.

What do you think about the decision?

COVID ramps up in Montrose | From the Newsroom

Hi and hello! Cassie here with your daily newsletter.

Halloween is this weekend and I'm personally pretty excited. It's probably my favorite holiday of the year (barring Día de los Muertos). I love the spooky season and everything that comes with it: the movies (both scary movies and classics like Practical Magic and Addams Family), the food and drinks, the weather and the décor are just the perfect mashup to me!

Did you know "guising" was first recorded in North America in 1911?

A Canadian newspaper reported on American children disguising in costume as they roamed their neighborhoods for coins and foods. The practice didn't really pick up steam until 1930, though.

Are you dressing up this year? Share a photo with us and it may be featured in next weeks' newsletters!

The Ute Museum is featuring Gregg Deal: The Ute Museum recently opened a new art exhibit featuring the work of Gregg Deal, from the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe). Deal is a contemporary artist and activist focused on indigenous identity through a pop culture lens.

Deal's new exhibit, "Merciless Indian Savages," is an Indigenous exploration of what American democracy means for Indian Country and will be up through January 2022.

The COVID situation in Montrose is only getting worse: Montrose Regional Hospital is busier than ever, reaching capacity almost daily now. The county's positivity rate has jumped drastically from the September 27 COVID roundup we published in which the positivity rate was 6.09%. At the time, that was a 24.79% increase from the week prior.

The significant increase reflects the spike in weekly COVID positive cases as well. As of today, Montrose County has 237 new confirmed cases in the past week.

Today in history: In 1904, the New York subway opened!

"At 7 p.m. that evening, the subway opened to the general public, and more than 100,000 people paid a nickel each to take their first ride under Manhattan.

IRT service expanded to the Bronx in 1905, to Brooklyn in 1908 and to Queens in 1915. Since 1968, the subway has been controlled by the Metropolitan Transport Authority (MTA).

The system now has 26 lines and 472 stations in operation. The longest line, the 8th Avenue "A" Express train, stretches more than 32 miles, from the northern tip of Manhattan to the far southeast corner of Queens."
