'Broken Toes' author returns to Montrose ... When bestselling children's-book author Matt Eicheldinger spoke to our reporter Kylea Henseler ahead of his visit to town this week, he relayed an interesting story: as a kid growing up in Montrose, he once happened upon a pack of llamas. As he was holding a bag of dog poo, naturally he hurled the bag at the llamas, who in turn began to chase him around a field. There is something hilarious and beautiful about this image — approaching poetic. In any case, this is just the sort of experience that would inspire Eicheldinger to eventually begin writing children books. His "Matt Sprouts and the Curse of the Ten Broken Toes" is a New York Times bestselling novel. This week, the author, who now lives in Minnesota, will return to his former town for a series of events. First, he will meet with Montrose and Olathe students, then host two public author-signing events Thursday and Friday. To read more about Eicheldinger and his 'Broken Toes' bestseller — which is set in Montrose — and get the details about his local events, check out Kylea's story here. And also, some fresh Middle Bridge-workaround news ... With the Blue Mesa's Middle Bride out, travelers traversing the miles on US 50 between Montrose and Gunnison have been limited to an alternate route — CR26 — open twice a day. Starting Friday, this alternate route, which makes use of the Lake City cutoff and adds about an hour onto the trip, will have additional route times, with four trips each way scheduled throughout the day.
