Image

Happy Tuesday friends,

As you may know by now, each week I highlight some of our top news stories, local businesses and good news, as well as upcoming events. I like to think of myself as your local guide to what's happening around town. Of course, this community newsletter is for you. Are there ways we can improve these emails? You can reach me anytime at cassiek@montrosepress.com

Headlines

CDOT has a U.S. 50 bridge closure update tonight

Image

As you know, the bridge was shut down for safety and structural reasons last month, cutting off direct access between Montrose and Gunnison. The closure has raised extreme concerns for students, businesses, medical patients, recreationists, ag/cattle producers, and the general public.

While we haven't yet heard of any viable solutions for repairing the bridge, we hope that may change with CDOT's latest status report this evening.

The hybrid virtual/in-person meeting is from 6:30 - 8 p.m. tonight, in Gunnison, or by Zoom at https://us06web.zoom.us/j/87860154317

Montrose County granted a controversial gravel stockpile permit

Image

Third time's the charm? Haynes Excavation finally secured a special use permit to continue storing mined gravel on agriculturally zoned property.

Todd Haynes, the owner, sought the permit after discovering that the storage pile did not comply with zoning regulations.

Montrose County commissioners unanimously approved the permit, allowing Haynes to sell the gravel to contractors and developers until September 30, 2028.

A Delta County teen is recovering from a gunshot wound

Image

Kasen Spencer, a 15-year-old from Orchard City, is fighting to recover after being shot in the head last Friday.

The incident happened in northern Delta, while Kasen was with other young people in or near an RV parked on the property. The exact circumstances of the shooting are still under investigation by the police.

The family's GoFundMe post states Kasen required emergency surgery and details his journey to date. His family needs to be able to be with him in Salt Lake, but also needs to maintain their household in Delta County at the same time. All proceeds go to Kasen and his family.

Our thoughts and hearts go out to Kasen, his family and his medical team during this unthinkable time.

Habitat for Humanity of the San Juans is tackling affordable housing

Image

Rome wasn't built in a day, but still, progress can seem like it's crawling when it comes to finding affordable housing.

Habitat for Humanity of the San Juans is making strides on this local issue after recently breaking ground on the Pahgre Place Rotary Build project, located at a lot on North 2nd Street that will soon become affordable duplexes for some lucky applicants.

Thank you to the volunteers for making this effort possible!

Groove into the weekend @ the Sherbino

Image

Musical group MarchFourth is performing at the Sherbino this Friday at 8 p.m. Advanced tickets are $45/Day-of tickets are $50.

Fun fact: MarchFourth's track "Gospel" (from their self-released album Rise Up, 2009) was featured as the closing credits theme song in the Disney/Pixar animated film, Monsters University.

MarchFourth's new album Worth It is due out in 2023.

Adopt a new furry friend @ Riverbottom this weekend

Image

Montrose Animal Services is hosting an "Adopt-A-Friend" Field Day at Riverbottom Park this Saturday from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. (at the baseball fields).

Maybe you'll meet sweet Mesa while you're there! Mesa is a 4-month-old pup with a mix of Great Pyrenees and Aussie. Maybe I'm biased, but I do love Aussies.
