Tis the season for porch drinking

When the sun goes down late and it's warm enough for a good bike or hike, nothing closes out the day better than grabbing a post-workout drink with friends as the sun is setting.

Sometimes the workout part is optional, and sometimes the friends are optional too.

But one thing's for sure, there's plenty of good places in Montrose to grab a well-earned drink, whether you're looking for a speakeasy experience and high-end cocktail at Phelanies or an unpretentious brew from Pomona.

Yesterday, I tried Storm King for the first time, which distills it's whiskey right here in Montrose. I opted for a summer gin drink, an appetizer from the Baan Thai food truck and some whiskey infused chocolates made by Alpen Confections.

Everything was great!

And soon, Storm King won't be the only place to get a locally-distilled whiskey, as Shelter Distilling will open the doors of its new riverside location on Saturday.

I popped by earlier this week to check out the spot, and it's certainly coming along, with seating for over 200 and six beers on tap, plus plenty of distilled beverages ready to go.

Grand opening festivities will run from 11 a.m. to midnight Saturday, with live music starting at 5 p.m.

Cheers (literally),
Kylea

Heartbreak & humor — Shawn Hess mixes comedic relief with songs rooted in sorrow

When Wyoming-based guitarist Shawn Hess started writing country songs, he was a hurting man. These days, he said there's some happier tunes sprinkled into his catalog as well; but "it's still a lot of heartbreak." Hess will bring his traditional sound to Bluecorn Saturday.
