Happy Tuesday friends,

Every week, I like to share some of our top news stories, highlight cool local businesses, and spread some good news. I like to consider myself as your go-to local guide for all things happening around town.

And guess what? This community newsletter is made just for you! Do you have any suggestions on how we can make these emails even better? Feel free to shoot me an email anytime at cassiek@montrosepress.com. I'd love to hear from you!

Headlines

Little Blue is about to wrap construction

Image

That's right - Little Blue Canyon is expected to finish construction along U.S. 50 just as Blue Mesa Reservoir's Middle Bridge is scheduled for a partial reopening.

Shoshana Lew, executive director of the Colorado Department of Transportation, said last week that CDOT hopes to get both projects wrapped by July 4.

Residents again push city for declaration of non-sanctuary status

Image

A group of Montrose residents once again took to City Council chambers asking councilors to explicitly declare the city a "non-sanctuary city."

Council had already voted 3-5 against making a formal resolution on this subject back in March.

Why this matters

This issue comes on the heels of Denver, having declared itself a sanctuary city, aligning itself with migrants seeking refuge. On the other hand, the city is also overwhelmed with more migrants than the city has resources for. As a result, many migrants seek refuge elsewhere.

Did you know?

Montrose is already a non-sanctuary city by default. Council would have to formally declare itself a sanctuary city for migrants in order for that to change.

The term "sanctuary city" refers to a city that actively takes such measures as not cooperating with federal officials enforcing immigration laws, and that actively provides services such as shelter and food for migrants.

Three bills aimed at further regulating the funeral home industry were signed into law

Image

Last week, a trio of bills aimed at further regulating the funeral industry in Colorado were signed into law.

These measures were prompted by the Sunset Mesa Funeral Directors scandal involving Megan Hess, who sold human remains without consent.

The new laws will now require funeral professionals to be licensed and will subject businesses to regular inspections.

With this new space, they can offer more classes for all kinds of people. The Art Garage has been hosting art classes for adults and students since January.

They're still working out all the details, but they've got lots of exciting things planned for the future!
