Hat's off to the graduates ... It's happening again. Just like it does every year around this time — graduating students are tossing their caps in the air in celebration of finishing up years of schooling, of their eminent arrival on the main stage of life. Seniors in Montrose County — at Montrose and Olathe high schools, as well as the PEAK Academy — celebrated their graduates with commencement ceremonies this past weekend. Here's how MHS principal Heidi Voehringer framed the moment for her graduating students: "You've spent the last 12-plus years working hard, growing and learning. Now you stand at a new start, the start of a bright future. Yesterday was about getting up and making it to class. Tomorrow is about you and your dreams and turning them into reality. You are ready." Ready for what? Ahhh, yes, dream-reality-ing. This is good advice. Dreams are important, without them it's easy to drift off course, or lose your bearings altogether. Another nugget of sage advice came from beyond the commencement ceremonies a few days earlier, from MHS track and field coach Brian Schwerdtfeger. The track coach wasn't talking about graduation or to graduates, but it applies all the same. Schwerdtfeger was talking about Trevor Hill, who had just won first place in the discus throw at the state championship. Describing the student's commitment to practice and improvement in order to realize his full potential in competition, the coach described Hill as a "student of the game." This seems like something graduating seniors should be encouraged to strive for — to always be students of the game. And the game is, of course, life. Because though graduation is indeed a completion of years of schooling, the learning is far from over — it's only just beginning. We all remain students for all of our lives, and should actively stoke our fires of curiosity and feed our hunger for new knowledge. Good luck out there.
