$32K Water Bill in Paonia

What's with the water issues in Paonia?

It's been well documented that the town of Paonia has had its share of water issues over the past few years.

This time the issue was with an individual. It appears that their residence 'leaked' over a million gallons of water resulting in a $32,000 water bill.

But there's more to the story; the responsible party was also six months in the rears on their water bill. Six months behind and the town didn't shut off service.

What I'm a bit confused about is that Interim Town Administrator Leslie Klusmire, who reported this at the last Board of Trustees meeting, also stated that the town had to use a bulldozer to get to the meter. It wasn't clear when that happened or how the meter was being read prior.

Klusmire presented a solution at the meeting. Allow the person to pay their outstanding water bill balance prior to the $32,000 bill, fix the leak and then - based on prior year usage - bill them for that amount instead of the $32K.

There's no policy in place to address the issue so it was put before the board for a vote. It passed 3-2.

Here's the full story from the Delta County Independent.
