Well, Montrose, we had a few treasure troves, and now, they are going away.

I wanted to give a shout out to all the artisans who kept their creative wares available right downtown over the years, at the Creative Corner, now set to close in May.

I also want to thank the volunteers who for eight years ran The Green Cupboard, whose jewelry sales and generous underwriters helped fund worthy causes. We've written about both downtown staples closing soon, here and here.

Today, I want to highlight the dedication and energy of the volunteers, led by Vanessa, who are running themselves ragged as The Green Cupboard fills with folks shopping the closeout sales.

The past four weekends (yes, firsthand knowledge, and some purchases might also have taken place), the ladies have worked tirelessly, professionally, knowing that on March 25, it's all over. The Green Cupboard closes that day.

The bright spot? You can still contribute to the nonprofit The Green Cupboard funds: The Dolphin House Child Advocacy Center.

The center helps the child victims of sexual abuse, physical abuse, and witnesses to domestic violence, along with their non-offending family members. It provides resources, along with a kid-friendly environment for the types of interviews and exams that no child should ever have to undergo. Unfortunately, many do. Dolphin House case numbers typically exceed 200 per year, the bulk of them in Montrose County, although the center also serves Delta, Gunnison, Hinsdale, San Miguel and Ouray counties.

Just a taste

A taste of spring, that is. The vernal equinox is today, although the nippy breeze and persistent gray skies would have you doubting. (Not to mention yet another winter storm warning for higher elevations ).

Sunday, the last day of winter, was a different story, though. Case in point: The Cerise/Riverbottom Park complex right in downtown Montrose saw an endless parade of dog-walks, regular walkers (hi; it's me!), small kids in pink toy jeeps that had my 6-year-old past self jealous — and hardy souls like the person in the photo below, who was among the paddleboarders and river surfers not letting a good rapid go to waste.

If you've not checked out the Water Sports Park at Riverbottom, put it on your list. It's too cold to dip a toe in yet, but it's not too soon to watch those more talented than me ride the waves!
