Blooms and nice surprises

Well, today it finally looks like spring might be making an appearance, with warmer weather and (to the delight of my home's feline occupant) singing birds. Also, in a sure sign that change is on the way, today I had to alternate between running my car's heater and air conditioning!

By calendar, it is still winter — vernal equinox is not until March 20. By virtue of it being Colorado, the weather can change on a dime.

Even amid the gray and dreary weather last week, though, I got a welcome gift that put me in the springtime mood, when Kay Alexander dropped by a lovely bouquet for International Women's Day. (Learn more about it here.)
Thank you, Kay. It wasn't necessary, but is very appreciated.

Happy (almost/we hope/cross your fingers) Spring, from Katharhynn in the newsroom!

Police dog's bite, bark both something to avoid

Even when it's raining, a field trip out of the office is welcome — especially when it's something as cool as watching a police K-9 at work. There's a reason K-9's are community ambassadors, as well as crime-fighting tools.

That reason would be training. It was a real treat to meet Delta Police Department's K-9, Raico, and watch a live demo of his handler and a trained decoy demonstrate the department's new bite-suit. Here is the story and below, some extra photos, all showing Officer Justin Korth and Raico, as well as one of Raico's handler, Officer Kali Henderson.
