$16.2 million approved for police building upgrades: The Montrose City Council has given the green light for the renovation and expansion of Montrose Police headquarters. The project is funded by a voter-authorized 0.58% sales tax hike in the city.

"It's an exciting day for the Montrose Police Department, for sure," Mayor Barbara Bynum said, shortly after the council's unanimous vote to authorize the $16.2 million construction figure. "I think this is going to be a meaningful civic building to our community."

Eligibility adjustments for stimulus checks: Senate Democrats have agreed to adjust the $1.9 billion American Rescue Plan Act to lower the cap on incomes available. According to CBS:

Under the agreement, the $1,400 direct payments to taxpayers will begin to phase out at $75,000 for individuals, with no one making more than $80,000 eligible for payments. For couples who file jointly, the phase-out will begin for those making $150,000 and end at $160,000.

However, families with children in college — or other so-called adult dependents — will be eligible for $1,400 payments in the current rendition of the bill.

Watch a livestream of the Senate debating the stimulus package here. The debate started at 10 a.m. MT without a scheduled end time.

A year in the life of the governor: As a part of a week-long series about the pandemic in our state, the Colorado Sun published this in-depth look into the early days of the pandemic from Gov. Jared Polis' perspective.

"You're in a triage situation," Polis said in an interview, explaining how he has often had to go against his instincts in order to keep the public safe. "You know there's going to be lives lost. Who would think losing 6,000 people could ever be a win instead of 8,000? It's just horrific every day."

The article gives a behind-the-scenes glance into the day-to-day life of Colorado's governor during a pandemic.

Throwback Thursday: The dance floor was on fire almost two years ago as the 4th annual CASA Dancing with the Stars event took place at the Montrose Pavilion. The Montrose Daily Press featured some of the highlights from the evening in our March 5, 2019, edition.
Ten teams competed, and the funds raised from the show went toward the advocacy group and a local non-profit organization of the dancers' choice.
While last year's event was canceled due to the pandemic, we can only hope to see these performers on the dance floor soon.

'Tis the season to be calving
Colorado calves started arriving almost two weeks ago, in the heart of that Polar Vortex thing. Not good timing. But heifers tend to go shorter term than the experienced mama cows and suddenly there the calves are — cold and wet. The next several weeks will be a happy and stressful time for Western Slope ranchers, as the herd replenishes itself, sometimes under tough conditions.
