Happy hump day! Cassie here with your daily newsletter curation. I'm a little disappointed in myself - yesterday was September 21 and I didn't even reference Earth, Wind and Fire! I hope you were able to remember the 21st night of September as you go through this beautiful fall day. Fun (maybe) fact about the classic song: Several theories have bounced around as to why the date was used in the song. Songwriter Maurice White said he simply liked how it sounded when it was sung, but his wife, Marilyn, said Sept. 21 was the due date of their son, Kahbran. At least that's what lyricist Allee Willis claimed.
Woodgate Road realignment will see some delays: I spoke with City Engineer Scott Murphy this afternoon about some recent delays to the southern end of the project. Murphy said that because of utility relocation conflicts with a third-party utility company, the delay is out of the city's hands for now. Essentially, there are a couple of main utility cabinets that serve fiber optics and they don't belong to the city. The plan for the past year was for these utilities to be relocated out of the city's way so they could put their own in, but the current cabinets have gone offline. For now, they're unable to be relocated until it's back online. I'm working on the full story, which will be coming soon! For now, take a look at the city's news release regarding the delay as well as the scheduled paving for the north end of the project.
Montrose outdoor businesses back the Colorado Wilderness Act: The Colorado Wilderness Act would accord permanent wilderness protection to about 660,000 acres in the state, including 17,587 acres within the Roubideau Proposed Wilderness; 12,102 acres of Norwood Canyon Proposed Wilderness; 33,351 acres within the Dolores River Canyon and 28,279 acres within the Little Bookcliffs. You can read staff writer Katharhynn Heidelberg's full story here.
The city's parks department is discussing Dark Skies initiatives: I had a nice chat with Jackie Bubenik, the Public Works Assistant Manager, today. We mostly spoke about the city's approval this week of pursing a CDOT grant for park improvements on Main St., but we also touched on the Dark Skies conversation so many are passionate about. Right now, the city is just bouncing around options and is in discussions, but Bubenik said that replacing lighting along Montrose streets, such as Main St., is a large goal. One current obstacle is that DMEA doesn't own all the lights. They would be able to replace a light with their own Dark Skies-friendly light if a current one were to go out, but that's not likely to happen for a while.
Aviation moments: Sunday was a great opportunity to see seven armed service members jump from planes during the weekend's tribute to aviation. Staff Sergeant, SSG, Jason Bauder of Aurora, Colorado was a featured jumper.
