Good afternoon! It's Josue with today's newsletter. As many of you already know, Montrose High School's football team is 5-0 at the halfway mark of the season. The team has played exceptionally well with numerous contributions on both sides of the ball. Tomorrow, Montrose will play another 5-0 squad — Palmer Ridge. It's a highly anticipated matchup between two top 4A teams and league rivals. Palmer Ridge is ranked No. 1 in 4A and Montrose is No. 4. I asked a few players and Montrose head coach Brett Mertens about the upcoming matchup and the message was the same — the team is ready and excited for Friday night's game, which starts at 6 p.m. You can read more about the matchup between Montrose and Palmer Ridge here.
Former school board member returns: The MCSD school board unanimously appointed Tom West to fill the vacant District D seat during a work session earlier this week. West previously served on the school board from 2011 to 2019 and taught at MCSD schools for 33 years. Five other school board seats are up for grabs in the election this November, so my colleague Anna Lynn Winfrey has been following the upcoming school board elections closely. You can read more of her coverage here.
Episode 3: Mo-Town Knows returns with Episode 3 tonight as staff writer Cassie Knust sits down with Hispanic Affairs Project leaders Ricardo Perez and Karen Sherman Perez, and Bebe Byrd of the Olathe Language Connection, to discuss Hispanic Heritage Month and issues surrounding the immigrant and Hispanic communities in Montrose. You can watch the first two episodes here.
Make-A-Wish 12/12: Montrose is testing out a pilot program from the Make-A-Wish foundation, called Make-A-Wish 12/12, which allows people to donate on a monthly, automated basis for different donation amounts.
Montrose will serve as the "test" community for this new program. Read more about the program and its goals in Cassie's story.
Montrose trivia: Last weekend was a special one for Rockies fans at Coors Field as the Colorado Rockies retired Larry Walker's number, just weeks after Walker's induction ceremony into the Baseball Hall of Fame. The first person to answer this trivia question correctly will receive a Larry Walker bobblehead that was given out to fans before last Saturday's game. Send your answer to josuep@montrosepress.com. In 1997, as a member of the Rockies, Walker was named the National League's Most Valuable Player. How many home runs did he hit that season?
